how do you block Instagram on desktop but not on your phone?
updated
a lot of people want Instagram split in two: available on the phone, where friends and messages are, and out of the way on the laptop, where the work is. the trick is to make the change on the computer itself rather than on your Instagram account, because anything tied to the account follows you to every device.
there are three practical ways to do it, depending on whether you want a hard block or something gentler.
why the computer, not the account
anything you change inside Instagram applies to your account, and your account is the same on every device. changes made on the computer stay on the computer: a browser extension only affects the browser it’s installed in, and your computer’s settings only affect that machine. your phone never knows.
one thing to avoid: blocking Instagram on your router or Wi-Fi network. that blocks it for every device on the network, including your phone whenever it’s on home Wi-Fi.
option 1: a blocking extension
a website blocker in your browser is the most flexible hard block. you add instagram.com to a list, and the browser refuses to load it. most blockers let you set schedules, like weekdays from nine to five, or a daily time limit.
two well-known options for Chrome and other browsers are LeechBlock NG, a free extension with schedules and time limits, and Cold Turkey Blocker, a desktop app for Windows and macOS that can also block apps and lock blocks so they can’t be undone early. our comparisons of LeechBlock NG and Cold Turkey go into when each makes sense.
the limit of an extension is that it only covers the browser it lives in. if you use two browsers, you need it in both.
option 2: the hosts file
every computer has a small file that maps site names to addresses, and you can use it to send instagram.com nowhere. it works in every browser on that computer, with nothing to install.
- on a Mac: open Terminal and run
sudo nano /etc/hosts. - on Windows: open Notepad as administrator and open
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.
add these two lines at the end, save, and restart your browser:
0.0.0.0 instagram.com
0.0.0.0 www.instagram.com
to undo it, delete the lines. it’s a blunt tool: no schedules, no exceptions, and it’s easy to forget it’s there. but it’s free, works everywhere on that machine, and never touches your phone.
option 3: make it dull instead of blocked
blocks have a habit of getting switched off. you need to check a message, so you lift the block, and it doesn’t go back on. if that sounds familiar, the alternative is to leave Instagram reachable on the laptop but take away what keeps you there: the color, the motion, and the instant start.
our guide on how to make Instagram boring covers the idea in detail. the short version: turn the site gray, slow its videos down, and put a short pause in front of it. you can still check a message in ten seconds, but scrolling for forty minutes stops being appealing.
how dimmer does it
dimmer is a Chrome extension, so it only ever touches Chrome on the computer you install it on. your phone, the Instagram app and your account are untouched.
on the laptop, Instagram is on by default when you set dimmer up:
- it turns gray from the first frame (free);
- the Explore and Reels links are hidden (free);
- it opens after a short pause, which grows each time you come back the same day (free);
- with pro, videos play slower and reels arrive one every few seconds.
if a hard block suits you better, use a blocker. if you want Instagram on the laptop for the useful parts, without it eating your afternoon, dimmer is built for that. and if you want someone to keep you honest about it, an accountability partner helps either way.
questions
will blocking Instagram on my laptop affect my account?
no. these methods only stop your computer from loading the site. your account, your messages and your phone app are untouched.
can i block Instagram on the laptop only during work hours?
yes, with a browser extension that has schedules. the hosts file can’t do schedules; it’s on until you edit it again.
will a router or Wi-Fi block work?
it will block Instagram for every device on that network, including your phone while it’s on home Wi-Fi. that’s the opposite of what you want here.
