should you use BlockSite or dimmer?
updated
BlockSite is a blocker with apps for most places you browse. dimmer is a single Chrome extension with a different goal: keep the sites reachable, but take the pull out of them.
what BlockSite is
according to its own site, BlockSite blocks websites and apps. it offers a focus mode that blocks distractions for a set amount of time, schedules, blocking by keyword or category, password protection, a redirect option and browsing insights. it’s available for Chrome, Safari and Edge, on iOS and Android, and as a desktop app that blocks across several browsers at once. there is a free version and a paid premium plan.
how dimmer is different
dimmer never blocks. on the sites you choose in Chrome, it adds a short pause before the page opens, which grows each time you continue the same day, turns the site gray from the first frame and hides its feeds. with pro, videos play slower, scrolling takes more effort and a short check-in appears every few minutes. you can add an accountability partner who gets an email if you break the promise you set. turning anything down waits 24 hours.

when BlockSite is the better choice
- you want blocking on your phone as well as your computer.
- you use Safari or Edge, or several browsers.
- you want to block by keyword or category rather than naming each site.
- you like a timed focus mode that blocks everything for a session.
when dimmer is the better choice
- you need the sites sometimes, and blocking keeps getting in the way.
- the feed, the color and the autoplay are what keep you there, and you want those dulled.
- you want an accountability partner, with the pages you visit staying in your browser.
